Both miss the point.

Energy work doesn’t need blind belief. And it doesn’t need to be mystical to be real.

When you strip away the language, what we’re often talking about is this: The nervous system responding to internal and external signals and reorganising itself accordingly.

“That practice released something emotional”

What’s actually happening is often:

  • Changes in autonomic nervous system activity
  • Shifts between sympathetic (mobilisation) and parasympathetic (rest, digestion, repair) states
  • Increased interoceptive awareness (your ability to feel what’s happening inside your body)



Science already has words for this, we just don’t always use them in wellness spaces.

Why It Can Feel So Intense

Energy work practices often involve:

  • Slow, controlled breathing
  • Sustained attention inward
  • Gentle touch or no touch at all
  • Stillness or subtle movement
  • All of these are strong nervous system inputs.

Research shows that:

  • Slow breathing directly influences the vagus nerve
  • Focused attention increases body awareness and emotional processing
  • Safe, contained environments allow stored stress responses to complete



In other words: Your system finally gets permission to finish what it started. No magic required.

Why Emotions Sometimes Surface

People often get confused (or scared) when emotions arise during “energy work.”

But this is not a failure, it’s physiology.

Unprocessed stress isn’t stored as thoughts. It’s stored as patterns of tension, breath restriction, and nervous system readiness.

When the system downshifts into safety, those patterns can:

  • Release
  • Reorganise
  • Or briefly come into awareness before settling



That’s not “energy leaving your body.”

That’s regulation happening in real time.

The Problem Isn’t Energy Work - It’s Bad Explanations

Where energy work does go wrong:

  • When it replaces medical or psychological care
  • When people are told emotions mean something is “wrong”
  • When claims are made without grounding or consent
